Creepiest Kids Show Award Goes To….

lazy-town-group

Lazy Town! We have been watching an ungodly amount of Noggin in this house lately and Lazy Town was recently added to the line up. Bizzaro, disturbing, weird and strange are a few words to describe the entire Lazy Town cast.  The show is Icelandic, which explains a few things. I’m not sure why, but it just does. Before we found out the show was foreign-made we sat around wondering how this thing was pitched and sold to the TV network. Did they bring in these funky looking childlike animated mannequins for a demo? And then roll out their villain character, which is the freakiest character on the show (possibly freakiest on all of TV!)? I would think a sinister man that is part human and part prosthetic would have any American TV exec seeing red. This is a channel for preschoolers ages 1.5-4. I figure they said “Hell if it’s a hit in Iceland! And the merchandising possibilities $$$$…we’ll be rich! Hahahhahahha (evil TV exec laugh). Anyway this show is weird. Any other creepy contenders?

i’m not sure if this is still on but the big comfy couch always scared the bejesus out of me. those creepy clown things were the stuff of nightmares.

tanyamami August 21, 2009 at 7:50 am

My son loves Lazy Town. You’d think it would give kids nightmares or something.

But what I really can’t stand is …. the fresh beat band!!!! I want to fight the white guy that raps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUyFEWSD0Sk skip to 50secs) I hate it so much that when it came on the other day I told the BD to turn it off and he starts rapping!!!!! I’m pretty sure I threw something at him and of course the 2.5 year old thinks his dad is so funny. I know it’s not really creepy but it’s just something that I just can’t watch.

FRESH BEAT BAND SUCKS!!!!!!!!!
O my gosh the guy that raps! We are always watching Noggin here too .
And do you notice that on most of these programs these kids don’t have parents??
Like Ruby and Max??? That little Max is a brat ! lol OK I’m getting worked up!

o.k., thank GOD my kids are finally done with this show. i had no idea it was icelandic but you’re totally right – for some reason, that makes sense. it’s so weirdo. we went through a phase last winter where i had to dvr it for them and every single time they asked to watch it i’d be like, “really?” my 4 yr old daughter recently asked me if i would let her dye her hair when she’s older. i told her “sure. what color are you thinking?” she said, “pink, just like stephanie from lazy town.” just when i thought were were done with the show, it reared its ugly head.

I have to say I’m kinda into Ruby and Max for some weird reason. “Max and Rubbbby…Ruby and Maxxxx!” But by far my favorite on Noggin is The Wonder Pets. BD thinks it’s encouraging Fritz to talk like a baby. Their voices are kinda ‘babyish’ I guess.
I’ve never actually seen The Fresh Beat Band but the commercials on Noggin make me want to shoot myself.

alissa August 21, 2009 at 1:55 pm

the wonder pets are adorably cute but i do wonder if the baby talk and lisps and stuff are very encouraging for kids. lazy town is…weird. i think both of these shows used to be on nickelodeon..i think?

Ally Keeler August 21, 2009 at 4:14 pm

Lazy Town….creepy.
I liked Ruby and Max until I realized that Ruby is a big bitch to Max.
Wonder Pets sing pretty fantastic songs though.
I love Mighty Bee by Amy Poehler and Ni Hao Kai-Lan!!

samantha August 21, 2009 at 4:22 pm

I love how we don’t even need to discuss Yo! Gabba Gabba because we all know it’s the mac daddy of all children’s shows. Ruby is kinda a bitch…good point.

pemora August 21, 2009 at 5:35 pm

ugh…i am SO glad that i’m not the only one who is annoyed by fresh beat band. we saw yo gabba gabba at summerstage and when fresh beat band came on stage, i just wanted a tall glass of wine. i was so bothered. and why do the “girls” look like faux-cougars? just a hot mess.

JungleForce! August 21, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Is it fucked up that I know all about the afore mentioned shows but have no kids:/

alexandra August 21, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Love that I’m not the only one that is weirded out by LazyTown. But OMG WonderPet! Whenever bf and I are arguin’ I’ll try to lighten up the mood, and say, “this is sewwwwious!” Love that show. Sesame Street wins the top spot though.

Sona August 21, 2009 at 8:59 pm

I can’t believe everyone loves the Wonder Pets! Ming Ming baby talk and how they sing everything they’re saying in that same tune, drives me insane. Luckily it comes on during bedtime so we hardly ever catch it.

Adrian totally starts bopping to The Fresh Beat Band and I don’t know if I’m more embarrassed for the white beat boxer dude or that my toddler is into it… he should know better.

I think the creepiest kid’s show I’ve ever seen is this British show called Boubah (boobaa?) but I can’t find anything about it on the net! Does anyone know what I’m talking about?

alissawins August 22, 2009 at 3:03 pm

boobah yes…i think its like the baby version of teletubbies. definitely weird, but sorta cute in a sparkly way. lol.

mandy August 22, 2009 at 3:39 pm

boobah is waaaay scarier than teletubbies – my BD and i argue all the time about teletubbies, i do NOT want our daughter to watch it! big comfy couch is pretty cool – except that doll of hers that doesnt talk but is always nodding her head… in england theres this super creepy/kinda rad kids show called dream street – i watched it one day (before i was pregnant) while i was super stoned and i think its supposed to trip you/the kids out….talking light posts and jackhammers and sh*t!

tanyamami August 22, 2009 at 5:04 pm

has fritz ever watched hard hat harry? he’s like a genie for trucks or something. anyway we have the firetruck, semitruck, and racecar ones and my son is glued to them. it’s like the mighty machine dvds but with this weird genie character. i’m sure he would love it though.

GLOSSY August 22, 2009 at 10:06 pm

OMG! SAM seriously! I was JUST talking to my other mommy friend about this show being so disturbing. From that creeps chola eyebrows, to the Kool Keith hair! this show really needs to go. HATED IT!

GLOSSY August 22, 2009 at 10:08 pm

@Sona HAHAHAAHAHA “The Fresh Beat Band” hahaha, I have wanted to talk about this for so long. Elliot is really into the song “Loco Legs” hahahaha.

mandy August 23, 2009 at 8:57 am

@Glossy “that creeps chola eyebrows” hahahahahha!

lebeam August 23, 2009 at 12:04 pm

oh man i hate both! the fresh beat band and lazy town. why is that lil girls dress so short? ugh. have you guys started watching sid the science kid on pbs?? we love love love love it!

Nena Stopnik August 23, 2009 at 12:09 pm

I think this show is super creepy too! We watch tons of noggin in this house as well and when I saw this show I was like what the heck! I have to agree with somebody who mentioned The Fresh Beat Band AKA The Jumparounds above as well. That show looks super lame. Why are these shows on noggin?

Jeff August 25, 2009 at 8:19 am

I agree with Dawn. Max and Ruby sucks BAD. The problem I have is that my son started talking at under 1-1/2, he’s 3-1/2 now and you can certainly hold a conversation with him. When he would watch Max and Ruby I found that he started expressing himself singularly, in other words; using 1 word to say what he wanted just like Max. I stopped him from watching that show from that point. The show doesn’t really have any value anyway as far as I’m concerned. The Fresh Beat Band won’t be on my T.V. either. It’s stupid looking. Lazy Town is bizzar too. I don’t really care if he watches that. To me it’s just a modern day Sid and Marty Croft show. Older parents will know what I’m talking about.

Stacy December 2, 2009 at 2:09 pm

I like lazy-town. it’s about the only kids show on that promotes actually getting off their asses and be active. ya, some of the characters are weird looking, but it’s not made to entertain adults, it’s made for kids and I know several kids who enjoy the show. Noggin is about learning, being accepting of people as they are and being active. I love their lineup, I think it’s great for kids. yo gabba gabba is the weirdest of all in my opinion, FAR more weird then lazy-town. Max & Ruby is good too, even if she gets annoyed w/her little brother….don’t ALL kids get annoyed w/their siblings? but it shows how to deal w/them in a constructive manner. if you are going to bash any network or show how about concentrating on Nick at Night and ‘Adult Swim’….like that has ANY business being on a kids channel.

DARLENE NIXON January 15, 2010 at 2:07 pm

IF PEOPLE THINK THAT THE FRESH BEAT BAND SUCKS THAN LAZY TOWN SUCKS TOO. THAT SHOW IS DUMB. I HAVE BEEN WATCHING THE FRESH BEAT BAND EVER SINSE THEY ON T.V. ANY OTHER SHOWS BESIZES THE FRESH BEAT BAND SUCKS. YALL BETTER LEAVE THAT SHOW ALONE. I THINK THAT SHOW IS A GOOD SHOW. I HAVE WATCHED LAZY TOWN AND I THINK THE PEOPLE IN THAT SHOW ARE DUMB. THEY CAN’T SING OR DANCE. THE FRESH BEAT BAND ARE BETTER THAN LAZY TOWN. FROM DARLENE

Lala July 2, 2010 at 5:08 am

I couldn’t agree more! This show sucks. It creeps me out! I can tolerate most of Nick Jr.’s other shoes – except for Blues Clues and Fresh Beat Band.

Actually one of many challenges which individuals beginning a new on-line firm face is that of acquiring guests to their net site.
