The Art Library Is The Coolest Place EVER!!

Tucked away on North 3rd street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, between an artisan chocolatier and an eclectic fashion boutique, is a very special place called the Art Library. I am compleatly enchanted with this place. It was created six years ago by two friends attending art school together. The foundation for the space is the Sketchbook Project. The Sketchbook Project is a submission based collection of sketchbooks. Anyone from any part of the world can submit a sketchbook and have it become part of a touring show that lives at the Art Library in Brooklyn.

At the library, for free, you sign up for a library card and can look at any of the books from dozens of themes. You can look at books in a few different ways. One way is to pick books by theme, or another is to chose geographically or even by name if you know who’s submitted work. The experience is hands on and incredibly intimate. A sketchbook is such a personal thing, and to sit there and be able to touch and flip through pages of a strangers work is so incredibly inspiring and fun. If I had the time I would spend hours at a time looking through the stacks of work that live at the Art Library.

On my last visit I decided to submit at book. After sitting and pouring over the books it’s hard not to want to become a part of the project. I chose the theme “Fill me with stories”. My idea is to use watercolor and collage to accompany handwritten memories of my life. I’m excited to have a purposeful art project to work on. I’ve got until January to complete my book and I’ll try to post some of my progress here.

I think have a few readers that should definitely get down with this…Oh hi Kri and Palmer!! But really everyone should give it a looksie, especially if you can see it in person here in Brooklyn. Another notable thing about the Art Library location is that they have the most amazing selection of notebooks and sketchbooks. They have actually curated a beautiful shop of supplies. A wonderful compliment to the Library. Check out the whole deal at Art House Co-op.

Ha! I had no idea this is where The Sketchbook Project lived. Had no idea it even had a home. Years ago, I came across that and was going to do it and then … oh I don’t know … I guess life got in the way. I’ll look into it again. Super cool place. I’ll have to go by there next time we are in the neighborhood (maybe Summer 2012??). Thanks for thinking of me. xo
