The Vacation of a Lifetime…

by samantha on July 26, 2012

I do not surf the net (do people still say that?) nearly enough. Today Lola is home sick and it’s raining; what a perfect day to mess around on the internet. Anyway, I stumbled upon this site which it so inspiring. These young’uns from Brooklyn traveled the US in their trusty little trailer checking out all the road side attractions, camping and staying in motels. They documented the whole thing on their Tumblr— The Open Highway Reader. Watch out, the video above might make you cry into your coffee cup remembering back to the days when it was just you, your man and the open road. Damn, how things have changed! But still, I can’t wait until the day I can do this with my family. Clearly, our cross-country trip will be less Ryan McGinley, more Griswold and I’m fine with that! Anyone done the family cross country yet? I’m thinking most of our kids are too young, but maybe you have some suggestions if you ever made the trip with anyone you love?

Great video. As a new mama, I’m still so in love with being a parent that I haven’t had time to be nostalgic for the old days yet. My hubby and I actually had a lifetime together (11 years) before having our Ramona and trust me, we lived it up good! :)

My boy and I drove 5552 miles across the US end of last year. It was absolutely the most awesome thing I have ever done. We stayed in motels and camped along the way and even stayed on a ranch in Texas (we are from London, UK so it was all insane to us). The freedom you feel when its just you guys with no plans, no responsibilities the open road and time on your hands, is the closest thing to feeling sheer contentment like a kid again. Depending on your route it would be a marathon with little ones as we sometimes drove 11hrs at a time and were having childlike meltdowns ourselves. That said a mini road trip around California say, would mean there is always something interesting for the kids to do at the end of a shorter day in a car (places like Yosemite, Santa Cruz etc). Man, I could talk about this subject for ever! x

We had to take an emergency roadtrip from CA to TX in 2010 before my mom had her hysterectomy (she was just diagnosed with cervical cancer) – It was hubby, me, our then 13 year old, 11 year old and 4 year old boys. They slept for the most part and were so good that I was even impressed lol We had a great time and stopped in Tucson, AZ on the way there and even took 2-3 hour naps in the parking lots of well lit hotels/motels. We definitely wanna do it again with more time and under better terms!
